Abstract

ABSTRACT Competitive pressures are prompting Canadian small manufacturers to vigorously pursue the adoption of new technology. Yet, there is the potentialfor managers to become somewhat blinded by the immediate benefits of the technology at the expense of adequately addressing how these benefits can assist in meeting their needs. Problems and benefits of technology acquisition as experienced by small/medium-size firms are contrasted with those of large companies. Two models on the process of technology acquisition are examined and compared with the unique issues facing small to large companies when adopting new technology. A framework is provided for evaluation of the pros and cons of attaining the technology.
