Abstract

This article discusses biological filtration, or biofiltration, a process that uses innocuous microorganisms for the breakdown and removal of biodegradable organic matter (BOM). Topics covered include: treatment plant design; biofilm problems; process effectiveness; the key to successful biofiltration processes; monitoring and evaluation; occurrence in various media; and, historical use of biofiltration.
