Abstract

In this study, we report the green synthesis of nontoxic, stable, and small size silver nanoparticle by using chitosan/ Mentha piperita extract with reducing/capping ability without any toxic reducing agents. Mentha piperita was used as a reducing agent for the synthesis of Ag NPs that next stabilized by chitosan polymers. The in situ prepared Ag NPs/CS- Mentha piperita bio-composite were characterized by advanced physicochemical techniques like FE- SEM, TEM, EDX and XRD study. It has been established that Ag NPs/CS- Mentha piperita bio-composite have a spherical shape with a mean diameter from 5 to 15 nm. In heart failure model, the rats were subjected to coronary artery ligation, and orally administered with Ag NPs/CS- Mentha piperita 12.5, 25 and 50 µg kg(-1) daily, from the 7th day after surgery. Administration with Ag NPs/CS- Mentha piperita led to a significant reduction in infarct size and improvement in cardiac function as demonstrated by lower left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP) and elevated +/-dp/dt(max). We found that Ag NPs/CS- Mentha piperita significantly reduced left ventricular (LV)/body weight ratio, lung/body weight ratio and significantly inhibited neurohormonal activation. The antioxidant activity of Ag NPs/CS- Mentha piperita bio-composite was determined by DPPH method. The Ag NPs/CS- Mentha piperita bio-composite showed the high antioxidant activity according to the IC 50 value.
