Przemówienie Benedykta XVI w Auschwitz może być odebrane jako forma usprawiedliwienia uległości Niemców wobec ideologii hitlerowskiej. Papież nie wnika w źródła entuzjazmu Niemców dla nazizmu (choćby chrześcijański antysemityzm), unika także tematu bierności i uległości Kościołów w Niemczech wobec nazizmu, które w momencie próby zawiodły. Odwróceniu oczu od winy własnej służy oskarżenie ateizmu jako źródła zbrodni hitlerowskich.
