Abstract

The results of a two-dimensional photoelastic investigation of the bending stress in the root fillets of gear teeth having convex, circular-arc profiles are presented. It is shown that the wedge theory predicts the compression stresses more closely than the Lewis equation. On the tension side of the tooth the Lewis parabolic model predicts the stresses more closely than the wedge model for low-pressure angles, but for pressure angles greater than 30 deg, the Lewis equation is inappropriate and the wedge theory predicts the tensile stress reasonably well.
