Abstract

A series of laboratory tests were undertaken to quantify the effect of section shape on bending strength and stiffness. Selected for analysis were sections utilizing three 38x140 mm (nominal 2x6 in.) members mechanically laminated together. 36 I-shaped sections utilizing a combination of engineered and dimensional lumber and 10 vertically-laminated assemblies utilizing only dimensional lumber were fabricated and tested to failure in bending. To determine the effect of polyurethane adhesive, 18 of the I-sections were fabricated using screws only and 18 of the I-sections were fabricated using screws and polyurethane adhesive. All 10 vertically-laminated assemblies were fabricated using screws only.
