Abstract

This paper describes the bending behavior of ductile iron pipes with rubber gasketed joints. The laboratory tests were performed by a specially designed counterforce frame. The specimens were 150, 200 and 300 mm diameter ductile iron pipes and the bending loads were accompanied with a constant water pressure 0.2 MPa. The bending mechanism is found to be quite different from the axial mechanism. The bending behavior is highly dependent on the lip lengths and clearance fit of the joint. The relationship of the bending moment versus joint bending rotations shows nonlinear behavior and pronounced variability, and the bending rigidity increases gradually with the interlocking bending stresses of the joints. Based on the test results, it has been concluded that rubber gasketed joints are effective in providing a leakproof and flexible connection for jointed buried pipelines.
