Abstract

(1) The relation between concentration and reaction time in solutions of pure, synthetic phenol was established for adultTrutta fario L.,Squalius cephalus Heck,Perca fluviatilis L., andPhoxinus laevis Ag. (Minnows), the experimental conditions beeing kept as constant as possible (Table 2). (2) The action of phenol (scale: manifestation time in minutes) follows a hyperbolic function and may be expressed by a linear relation, provided that threshold concentrations and minimum reaction times are subtracted from the experimental values (Table 3, Fig. 1 and 2). (3) The relative «sensitivity» of the different species in phenol is discussed on the base of a statistical analysis of the experimental results.
