Abstract
Hoverflies (Diptera, Syrphidae) were collected in the surroundings of Teberda and Dombai during the period of 2–14 July, 1979. The collection localities lie in the Northwest Caucasus at an elevation of 1300–2500 m in an area characterized by a lush and species-rich vegetation. The time of year (the first half of July) was obviously favourable for collection, as 320 specimens of 83 different species were taken. This is more than one fourth of the species previously known for the Caucasus. Among the animals collected are one first record of a species for Europe (Helophilus continuus), 11 new records for the Caucasus (Platycheirus tarsalis, Syrphus sexmaculatus, Ischyrosyrphus glaucius, Sphaerophoria taeniata, Cheilosia angustigenis, Cheilosia caerulescens, Cheilosia carbonaria, Cheilosia chloris, Cheilosia cynocephala, Cheilosia langhofferi and Cheilosia longula) and probably 19 new records for the Northwest Caucasus. The contrast between the relatively high number of species and the relatively low number of individuals per species is noteworthy. This situation suggests that the ecosystem in the area investigated is relatively undisturbed. Likewise noteworthy is the occurrence of a high number of Cheilosia species previously unknown for this region.
