Abstract

The design of industrially mass-produced houses was something of a unifying doctrine among early Modem Movement architects. This translated into the development of many mass-production prototypes and often into full scale industrial production of either whole buildings or kits of parts which could be assembled into various house configurations. “By 1965, there were 224 industrialised building systems available in Britain from 163 developers, 138 of them specifically recommended for housing.”1 This paper develops an ontological critique of this major architectural phenomenon based on Martin Heidegger's essay “The Question Concerning Technology.”2 The purpose of this critique is to develop an insight into the appearance of these buildings which is not addressed by critical acclaim of the period or more recent technical reviews.
