Abstract

The behaviour characteristics of I beams carrying a pure bending moment and subjected to a repeated thermal cycle have been determined for a wide range of the parameters involved. These fall into a number of patterns which are basically similar to those obtained by Parkes on thin web beams. Modifications to these patterns arise which can occur at lower temperatures than previously suggested and can cause ‘incremental collapse’ without the web being heated.
