Abstract

Measurements of the interfacial tension, using a drop time technique, have been made for trimethyl-n-propyl- and tetra-n-pentylammonium bromide solutions at different temperatures and concentrations. The results thus obtained show that the curves for the surface excess of concentration and the global surface excess of entropy are very different for the two cations studied. These results can be interpreted as indicating the role of hydrophobic forces between the water molecules and the alkyl groups when these contain more than three carbon atoms in a chain.
