Abstract

Eurocodes EN 1993 Design of steel structures gives guidance on how to design and verify uniform built-up members under compression with hinged ends laterally supported only. The built-up members in Eurocodes are considered as members with equivalent bending and shear stiffnesses with a local bow imperfection e0 = L/500. This paper investigates a more general case. The second order analysis is used for analysis of the laced built-up member with two IPE 240 sections under combined compression and bending action. The bottom member end is fixed and the upper end is free for in-plane buckling. The member is restrained against out-of-plane buckling at both ends. The global initial sway imperfection Φ is taken into account instead of the local bow imperfection with an amplitude e0 .
