Abstract

An instrumented 5 m long steel pipe pile with a diameter of 15.3 cm was repeatedly installed in an overconsolidated clay deposit and subjected to a variety of static and cyclic loading combinations. The results give a consistent interrelationship between the cyclic load levels and the number of load cycles to reach cyclic failure, and new fundamental understanding of pile/soil interaction. The general behaviour seems to be well modelled by direct simple shear tests on remoulded, reconsolidated clay in the laboratory.
