Abstract

This note describes the modelling of the response of a single-size granular material to repeated loading tests under biaxial plane strain conditions, and compares the results with those obtained under axisymmetric triaxial conditions. A pneumatically operated apparatus capable of applying two independent principal stresses under plane strain conditions was used to examine the resilient response of a 3 mm single-size dry granular material. Comparison of results with those predicted using a model based on data from axisymmetric triaxial tests using a sophisticated servo-hydraulic apparatus have shown that this model can be satisfactorily extended to the general three-dimensional stress state.
