Abstract

Augmentation of the magnetic field for electromagnetic railguns is a quite effective method to suppress the ablation of bore materials since it allows the reduction of plasma armature current without a decrease of the Lorentz force for a given acceleration. Another constructive effect of the augmentation on a plasma armature was observed in the authors' experiment, that is to say, an external magnetic field for the augmentation compresses the plasma armature in the axial direction and suppresses the broadening of the plasma armature. In this paper, the behavior of a plasma armature in an augmented railgun using permanent magnets is investigated in comparison with that in a railgun without augmentation.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
