Abstract

Behaviorally induced insufficient sleep syndrome (BIISS) is a clinical condition marked by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and other sequelae of chronic sleep deprivation. This diagnosis is usually applied to individuals who, without recognizing it, do not allow adequate time for sleep in their life schedule. In addition to EDS, BIISS is also associated with negative consequences for cognitive functioning, mood, metabolism, cardiovascular, and immune system function. The diagnosis of BIISS is made by careful history-taking and ruling out competing causes of hypersomnolence. All of the symptoms of BIISS are reversed by obtaining more sleep. The prevalence of problematic chronic sleep deprivation is controversial.
