Abstract

ABSTRACT The current study examined factors influencing recidivism at a children's residential treatment center (RTC). Data were collected on 89 children and adolescents, ages 5–17, from a RTC in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Patients who were readmitted to the hospital following their RTC stay were more severely impaired in their functioning at discharge, had shorter lengths of stay and previous hospitalizations. Knowing what factors put child and adolescent patients at risk for future acute or RTC admissions can help to decrease the number of rehospitalizations within this population. Findings suggest that giving children and adolescents sufficient time in a RTC to reach their treatment goals and to be emotionally stable prior to discharge may protect against recidivism.
