Abstract

This book looks at issues faced by young individuals and their carers and family members when dealing with chronic illness. It has two main parts. The first looks at the unique issues faced in adolescent chronic illness and the impact of family dynamics, the second at the evidence-based guidelines in major chronic illnesses in adolescents. The specific conditions covered include diabetes, chronic pain and rheumatological disease among others, and also includes kidney disease. This chapter looks in detail at the prevalence and common causes of kidney disease in this group. It describes the impact kidney disease has on young people, not just physically, but more importantly the psychological aspects. The different methods of renal replacement therapy are discussed and the positive and negative effects from a young persons view are described. Its obvious audience is paediatric nephrology, yet there is also much that adult renal specialists could gain from this book. The focus of this edition of the Journal of Renal Nursing is on the psychosocial aspects of kidney disease. All chronic diseases significantly impact on individuals’ psychological and social wellbeing as well as their physical state. If we are to provide truly holistic care, these issues need to be considered when planning and providing care for people with chronic diseases. This 4th edition of Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Chronic Illness and Disability describes the theories and concepts behind how chronic disease and disability is viewed and accommodated in society, and the impact it has on the individual. The Editor is a world renowned Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation Psychology and Counselling, and the chapter authors are leading experts in varied fields such as medicine, nursing, psychology, public health and health care management. The book starts with an overview of psychosocial and functional aspects of chronic illness and disability. It describes coping strategies, emotional reaction and acceptance, and the impact on life course of chronic illness, especially relevant when dealing with children and younger individuals with chronic disease. The subsequent fifteen chapters provide a helpful overview of illnesses that lead to chronic disease, including conditions of the nervous system, the blood and immune system, cancer and cardiovascular conditions, as well as a chapter on kidney disease. The latter is well written and of particular relevance to us. While not new to those in the renal field, it does provide a thoughtful reminder of the issues that face patients with kidney disease, such as the acceptance of a new and often restricted lifestyle, not to mention life expectancy in many cases. It also describes the impact on home life in terms of working and finance, body image and sexual function. The chapter finishes with some helpful case studies and working through these is an interesting and thought provoking exercise. This book is well written and interesting. It provides a helpful overview of the subject as a whole and also as an introduction to other conditions and their associated psychosocial issues that we sometimes come across. This would be a useful text for all health professionals new to the subject, especially those studying the area in more detail for further studies. In summary, highly recommended.
