Abstract

Tensile tests and Finite Element (FE) analysis were conducted on the Thread-fixed One-side Bolts (TOBs) bolted T-stub with arc-shaped flange to steel tube in this paper. Critical parameters were determined as the thickness of tube wall, the outer diameter of steel tube, the thickness of arc-shaped flange, and the center angle between bolts. Test results revealed that the connection would encounter three typical failure modes, which were: failure mode 1, thread shear failure with yielding of tube wall; failure mode 2, complete yielding failure of tube wall; failure mode 3, thread shear failure with yielding of T-stub arc-shaped flange. Developed FE models are verified and used to analyze the yield line pattern of tube wall, the hoop stress distribution of cross-section of tube wall, and the shear acting on bolt shank. Based on the experimental and numerical results, preliminary analytical models and design methods are proposed to estimate the tensile yield strength of specimens under different failure modes.
