Abstract

A series of centrifuge model tests were conducted to examine the behavior of piled rafts subjected to horizontal loads. The modeling included both vertical and horizontal loading tests of piled raft components and piled rafts, as well as shaking table tests of the same models. The results showed that 1) horizontal resistance of piled raft was much higher than that of raft alone, although the raft resistance in the piled raft “:as with same size raft 2) raft carried more horizontal load than the piles initially, with larger honzontal displacements the piles more than the raft, 3) change in the proportion of vertical load carried by piles during shaking was small, compared with that of the horizontal load, and 4) horizontal stiffness and resistance of a pile in piled raft were higher than those observed in the single pile loading test.
