Abstract

Behavior management problems occur frequently in the practice of pediatric dentistry and are especially common in pediatric dental work with the mentally retarded or the emotionally disturbed child. In the past the pedodontist has had few options in dealing with behavior problems other than physical restraint, sedation, or general anesthesia. There are now available to the pedodontist a variety of highly specific behavior modification techniques which will allow the dentist to increase vastly the degree to which he can successfully manage children with behavior problems. The present article summarizes the basic reinforcement techniques which can be used by the pedodontist and presents an illustrative case in which a longstanding dental phobia was reversed in only seven sessions through the use of positive reinforcement.
