Abstract
This chapter is about research questions. It is intended to help readers wrestle with the nonlinear, iterative process of generating quality research questions through the lens of teaching and learning. Questions addressed throughout the chapter include the following: What is a research question? What is the purpose of a research question? What strategies are used to generate research questions? Why are research questions important? How do research questions apply to the reader? The author combines a real-world research problem and a target analogy to lead the reader through the process of identifying problems and subproblems, connecting theoretical frameworks to hypotheses, identifying research purposes, and generating research questions. Exercises appear at the end of major sections helping the reader walk through the necessary steps to generate a research question. References provide background information and specific examples when the concepts being addressed move beyond the scope of the chapter. The chapter concludes with the reader reflecting on how the process of generating research questions applies to their own context.
