Abstract

Once again this year women are being encouraged to take part in Race for Life, the fund-raising event for Cancer Research UK. They are asked to run in their own name or for the memory of someone precious to them who has had cancer. More than 139,000 women in the UK were diagnosed with some form of cancer in 2003 (Office for National Statistics 2003) and with mortality figures of 73,500 among women alone (Office for National Statistics 2004), most of us will know someone who is one of this number.
