Abstract

Recent world events point to the need for emergency preparedness at all levels of hospital operations. This is no less true of hospital libraries. With their vulnerable physical collections and reliance on electronic resources, hospital libraries must plan to deal with such emergencies as fire, flood, and Internet loss. Formulating a hospital library emergency management plan is a detailed process but it needn't be difficult. A step-by-step approach can be employed in the development of library disaster control materials. Such a plan will lessen the impact of any potential natural or man-made disaster on library materials and services, and will increase staff confidence and efficiency in the face of an emergency involving the medical library.
