Abstract

Frequencies and intensities of the free OH stretching vibrations have been measured for seven silanols in four solvents and a good correlation with Taft's substituent constants was found. The solvent effect on frequencies is in reasonable agreement with the existing theories, deviations in chloroform are due to the proton-donating character of this solvent. The solvent effect on intensities is much greater as could be expected from theoretical predictions.
