Abstract

Respiratory failure is an infrequent complication after open-heart surgery, particularly in the absence of significant preoperative lung pathology. This report describes a patient who remained ventilator-dependent for nine weeks after aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass surgery with bilateral diaphragmatic paralysis.
