Abstract

AbstractAn estimated 2,500 babies are born every year with neural tube defects (NTDs) and many additionally affected pregnancies result in miscarriage. Fortunately, up to 70 percent of NTDs can be prevented if women of childbearing age consume 400 mcg of folic acid every day, irrespective of pregnancy status. In other words, no woman of child-bearing age is exempt from consuming 400 mcg of folic acid as a means of decreasing the incidence of NTDs (Locksmith & Duff, 1998).
