Abstract
The strength of Professor Silvestri's book is in fulfilling the promise implied in its title. This is a fine presentation of the evolution of John F. Kennedy's political thought and rhetorical prowess. The author sketches a detailed narrative of Kennedy's rhetorical progression through a political career that spanned 18 years. A public figure who had to learn how to "campaign by campaigning" and to "communicate by communicating" (281), Kennedy's public address experiences were equal to "his political development in shaping his public persona" (preface), which was a complex "mix of attractiveness, relevant message, and voter needs" (26).
