Abstract

Growing numbers of early childhood educators are taking central roles in researching their own settings. This paper explores the concepts of educational connoisseurship and criticism advocated by academic and writer on education and the arts, Elliot Eisner. Key processes are appreciation, interpretation and communication. These are examined in the context of a study of children's blockplay. Reflection; comparing and contrasting of viewpoints; the roles of observation, records, theory and background reading; understanding of ecological and socio‐cultural influences are discussed in terms of their contribution to educational connoisseurship and criticism.
