Abstract

This teaching case study examines how Beau Bledsoe, a guitarist in Kansas City, Missouri used the features of a portfolio career to create an enduring artistic practice that changed and adapted along with changes in the industry and his personal circumstances over the period of three decades. This case study is designed for undergraduate students to analyze how an individual artist utilized a strategy of multiple, dynamic revenue streams to create synergies and advance professional and artistic goals, while complimenting lifestyle factors at various stages of a career. The Instructor’s Manual includes learning objectives, sample questions and additional resources to guide discussion around portfolio careers, polyoccupationalism, individual artist entrepreneurship, and artist lifestyle factors.
