Abstract

In many rolling applications, especially where liquid lubrication is not allowed, wear is abetted by misalignments in the contact geometry. A rolling wear tester has been built where a measure of sliding is introduced by slight skewing of the rolling axes in the tangent plane of two contacting cylinders. Various contacting materials (plated and unplated) have been investigated under different conditions of speed, contact pressure and misalignment. An engineering wear analysis has been performed which is based upon the action of contact tractions during partial slip developed in the instantaneous contact area. The concept of “critical” misalignment angle θcr is introduced; for angles θ larger than θcr rigid body slip takes place without adherence. At misalignment angles θ less than critical the wear rapidly increases with θ.
