Bearing measurements using a compact wideband sensor by forming three dipoles

Abstract

This paper summaries the development of a compact sensor for determining the bearing angle of an incoming signal using trinary acoustic dipoles. The approach is a kin to the using orthogonal dipoles an omni-reference, which is common in DIFAR sonobuoy. Symmetrically processing three dipoles can offer advantages in sensitivity and extended bandwidth. Analytical and experimental results on the TRI-phase Bearing Estimator, or TRIBE, are presented.
