Abstract

A signal analysis technique for bearing fault detection based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and Teager Kaiser energy operator (TKEO) is presented. EMD can adaptively decompose vibration signal into a series of zero mean amplitude modulation-frequency modulation (AM-FM) intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). TKEO tracks the modulation energy of the interesting Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) and estimates the instantaneous amplitude at any time instant. In the end, the envelope spectrum is applied to the instantaneous amplitude. Therefore, the character of the bearing faults can be recognized according to the envelope spectrum. The experimental results show that envelope spectrum analysis based on END and TKEO provide a viable signal analysis tool for bearing fault monitoring.
