Abstract
We analyze symmetric and parallel nonlinear directional couplers with the finite-difference beam-propagation method. The results exhibit a cutoff phenomenon of an antisymmetric mode. We also investigate tapered nonlinear couplers for their possible applications to all-optical logic gates. The numerical results show that tapered nonlinear couplers can provide an XOR (eXclusive OR) logic function. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 15: 43–46, 1997.
