Abstract

A mathematical method presented in a previous letter to calculate the diffraction pattern of circularly symmetric laser beams propagating in free space is generalized to deal with beams of any shape propagating through optical systems that can be described by an ABCD ray transfer matrix. The method is based on the application of sampling concepts to the generalized Huygens-Fresnel propagation integral. Explicit expressions are given allowing computation of the diffraction pattern by means of simple personal computers. The accuracy of the method is shown in an example by comparison with analytical results.
