Abstract

The beam modes of a flange-supported core-support barrel, immersed in water, are determined when the motion is confined by the surrounding reactor vessel. The narrow gap between the inner shell and the outer rigid container is responsible for a substantial increase in the virtual mass of the shell, due to motion of the entrained water. The first four natural frequencies are determined in the ‘beam’ approximation.
