Abstract

In order to ensure the communication link stability in mobile free-space optical communication (FSO) system, a novel omni-directional regular icosahedron-shaped optical antenna is designed and its beam control method is proposed. The beam control strategy is studied in detail, which includes the switch between the transmission units on the same transmitting surface and the switch between the transmitting surfaces, and the numerical simulations are carried out. When the movement of the antenna is random and the number of the transmission units in each trans- mitting surface is designed as 820, the number of the transmission units on the same surface changes from 0 to 560 and the number of the switched transmitting surfaces is from 1 to 17, which is basically consistent with the actual situation. The results show that the transmission units of the antenna can be switched effectively according to the terminal's movement. Our proposed method is suitable for mobile FSO in all-directions. © 2012
