Abstract

A binary encounter model has been developed for computation of cross sections for double electron capture by multicharged ions incident on atoms. The capture of two electrons was assumed to consist of two independent processes. The model is applied for the study of the reactions He 2+ + X → He + X 2+ (X = Ar, Kr) and the calculations are compared with the available experimental results. The present model is found to give reliable estimates of cross sections for double electron capture by light multicharged ions of intermediate and high energies incident on heavy atomic targets. Discrepancies between the present results and the experimental values are explained.
