Abstract

During economic downturns and times of social unease—like the United States has experienced over the course of the last year thanks to the pandemic as well as the racial justice protests and political unrest that marked 2020—nonprofits typically have a hard time on many fronts. When people are less confident of their own financial and occupational position, they often give less to charity and commit less time to volunteer activities.
