Abstract

“BCR” is now an acronym that is recognised world-wide. It first appeared on the measurement scene some 30 years ago when the European Communities set up of the Community Bureau of Reference (Bureau Communautaire de Référence (BCR) in French), and it evolved in a succession of research programmes dedicated to measurement. For BCR, 2002 represented a crossroads, which was an end as well as a beginning: its end as a focused Research and Technological Development (RTD) framework programme; and, its new beginning towards being a self-sustained activity. This short note briefly recalls BCR achievements on the occasion of its 30th birthday (2003), which is marked by a radical transition from programme-related activities to a trade mark (BCR®).
