Babies with Their Mothers. Symbolization and Elaboration of Separation In a situation bringing together mothers and newborn babies with a psychoanalyst, a small group of mothers, then a small group of babies, functions inside the psyche of the mothers as an individual and common psychic group on which the difficult mother-infans separation is elaborated. The small group of mothers is the psychic object in which the body of each is fantasmatically reconstituted after separation. The small group of babies who have been separated is the ideal object at first invested narcissistically by the mothers. Work in a group facilitates this progressive passage of narcissistic investment of the group of babies to the investment of this group as a separate psychic object.
