Abstract

The question of whether the bauxite deposits of Jamaica originated from the insoluble residue of the underlying White Limestone Formation or from alluvium transported onto the limestone surface from the Cretaceous inliers has been the subject of considerable discussion.Analyses of the trace element contents of samples of bauxite, limestone residues and rocks from the inliers suggest that the limestone residue is the principal source material from which the bauxite has been derived.
