Abstract

Considered the most significant epic of Old Russian literature after The Tale of Igor's Campaign, The Tale of the Destruction of Ryazan, which was written in St. Nicholas Church, is a legendary war story in which historical events are evaluated from the viewpoint of religion and it is particularly influenced by Hagiography, a common literary genre around the Church. Batu Khan’s “The Tale of the Destruction of Ryazan” of 1237 is a significant war story of Old Russian literature. Not exactly known when it was written, the oldest copy we have of the tale dates back to the second half of the 16th century. This article deals with the role of Ryazan’s destruction by Batu in Turkish and Russian history.
