Abstract

Significance While overcapacity already exists, growth is required to deliver the volume of batteries needed for the world to get closer to reaching net zero emissions by 2050. The desire to develop and protect domestic battery manufacturing suggests a long-lived cycle of overcapacity, despite the tensions and price pressures this will cause. Impacts Overcapacity will increase competition for raw materials and the search for supply-chain security. The desire to develop and protect domestic industry suggests an increase in protectionist trade measures. The ability to innovate and to attract capital will likely be the defining characteristics of success in the sector.
