Abstract

This article formulates a soft-switched boost converter-based stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) system that integrates the battery within its DC-DC conversion stage. Modified topologies for battery-integrated zero voltage transitioned (ZVT) boost converter have also been proposed which provide an improved efficiency over the existing battery-integrated ZVT boost converter topologies. To obtain maximum efficiency under varying atmospheric conditions, a simplified maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller implementation in analog has been designed. The ZVT operation is achieved with the help of a simplified implementation of the soft-switching controller in analog which is independent of the parameters of the power circuit. The converter has been simulated and the results have been presented to validate the analysis and design. The feasibility of the proposed system has been verified on a prototype operated over a range of 25–110 W. The results enclosed demonstrate the effectiveness of the system.
