Abstract

Power quality is the issue that troubles the entire power system. Increased use of modern load devices and other factors like power system parameters reduce the quality of power. Active power filter (APF) is a FACTS device used to reduce the effect of load current harmonics and improve power quality in the power system. Battery Energy source integrated APF injects active power to the system and can reduce the burden on the main source. Active power management is Battery energy integrated APF made it feasible to control and manage the flowing of power interchange between APF and point of common coupling (PCC). Excess main power from the source can be used to charge the Battery and deficit power from the main source can be fed to inject active power to PCC. This paper exhibits the harmonic compensation in the power system in conjunction with energy storage battery systems. Battery charging and discharging conditions are illustrated with battery integrated APF. Synchronous Reference Frame theory is employed to sense and control the harmonics through APF. The analysis is presented and the model is developed using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. The results obtained demonstrate a good and satisfactory response to mitigate the harmonics in the system. The total harmonic distortion (THD) for the system has been reduced to 4.10 %, 3.62 % 3.06 % and 2.33 % in the simulation study with and without Battery respectively.
