Abstract
ABSTRACTThe study of urban identity in urban planning and design literature often pays attention to architectural elements and geographical landscapes. These components are considered features that make a city easy to remember and distinguish it from others, but biotic elements also have the potential to form these identities. Reports showed that these elements are not maintained in urban regeneration projects. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal the role of biotic elements as urban identity, with the case of bats in Watansoppeng. Data were collected using interviews, observation, and documentation. They were then analyzed qualitatively with the directed content analysis method using the ATLAS.ti 22 software. The results showed the significant role of bats as a form of urban identity through visual, behavioural, and cerebral components. Another role was found through the cosmological component of the community. Bats are not only the city’s uniqueness but have also become an élan vital.
