Abstract

July 15 coup attempt in Turkey is a historical event not only for Turkey and its people, but for region, even the world, as well. As the last fortress of the Middle East in terms of the democracy and political stability, lately Turkey has been the target of the Western countries and terrorist organizations. In order to understand better the stance of the West towards Turkey after the coup attempt, this paper briefly analyze the Western stance towards military coups. This article focuses on the role of the West and their support for coup plotters in four significant coups (1953 Iran, 1973 Chile, 2013 Egypt and 2013 Ukraine) from different parts of the world. In the second part, the paper examines official statements of Western decision-makers and the misleading and disappointing coverage of the Western media. Western countries that criticize not coup plotters, but democratically elected government, fell behind the developments in Turkey. This shows their hypocritical stance towards Turkey and the region.
