Abstract

The donation to The Natural History Museum, London of the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS) Discovery collections in 1997 included pycnogonids taken in bathypelagic samples collected with a rectangular mid-water trawl. The material of Pallenopsis tritonis Hoek, 1883 in these collections has been analysed and reported elsewhere. The present paper describes the remaining trawl material. One new species of Ascorhynchus is described. The male of Pallenopsis (Bathypallenopsis) scoparia is described for the first time. A number of new records of bathypelagic Colossendeis allow interpretation of the status of C. gardineri, recorded here for only the third time. The bathypelagic habit of pycnogonids is discussed.
